Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ gets a second season

Netflix’s popular lockdown series ‘Wednesday’ has officially been renewed for a second season. The show follows four teenagers as they live through the first lockdown in 2020 in their own individual, though socially connected, bubbles. The first season covers the ups and downs of lockdown life, tackling serious topics in a lighthearted and thoughtful way.

The show draws influence from classic coming-of-age films and is rooted in the friendships and relationships between its main cast. Viewers are already speaking to the show’s connection to viewers, saying, “The best part of ‘Wednesday’ is that the show is so relatable. Everyone can see a little bit of themselves in the characters and explore the issues they’re facing alongside them.”

Netflix’s other hit original series ‘Dark’ and ‘Stranger Things’ will likely be reaching the end of their respective story arcs after this season, so Wednesday’s renewal for a second season along with the upcoming ‘Sex Education’ proves that the streaming giant is interested in keeping the story of growing up in lockdown alive throughout its platforms.

During the first season, Wednesday received the approval of the Emmy judges and the second season shows promise of producing even bigger storylines, with a more developed backstory of why the characters are living in their respective homes with health conditions. The show also features various other storylines, such as the friendship between Wednesday and her flatmates, and the relationships between the couples on the show.

In an interview with ‘Vulture’, showrunners Esther Asaye and Joe Calarco discussed how the second season will build upon the first, “We wanted to continue to explore the idea of isolation in season 2. We wanted to go deeper into the issues the characters are dealing with, such as mental health, relationships, and the journey of growing up.”

The showrunners have also revealed that there will be more darker and complex themes in season 2, and that the characters will be managing with even greater pressures this time around.

All in all, the fans of Wednesday can’t wait to see how the second season shapes up. The renewal for season two has been well-received by fans and promises have been made that the second season will deliver even more heart and drama to the show than before.
