When it was announced that the beloved Blue Beetle comic book franchise was being adapted into a live-action television series, fans around the world were tickled with anticipation. The creation of a team of well-known and respected actors to bring the dynamic characters of Blue Beetle to life is esentially what will set the show apart.
In an exclusive interview with io9, executive producers of the show, Matt Nix and Sarah Schechter, were eager to share the casting choices and the thought process that went into finding the perfect cast.
They started off with casting the titular character, Jaime Reyes, saying that they wanted someone who was “smart, honest, and charming,” and they hit the jackpot with newcomer Tyler James Williams, whose extraordinary take on the character already has fans clamoring for more.
The producers also knew they needed a strong adult presence, and quickly chose Yvette Nicole Brown to play the role of Reyes’ guardian, Mrs. Reyes. Brown brings a unique blend of humor and strength to the role, which makes her an ideal fit and an essential part of the show.
The producers had a particularly difficult time when it came to casting the show’s villains. After many long nights of scouring the actor’s rosters, they finally found their perfect bad guys in franchise veterans Alan Tudyk and Gina Torres. Their ability to bring an air of menace and mystery to their roles makes them a terrific addition.
Finally, the producers turned to fan favorites to fill out the rest of the cast roster. While the producers admit that it was difficult for them to choose between all of the great performers who were vying for parts, their strong instincts led them to choose Edi Gathegi, Jaime Ray Newman, and Jake Austin Walker, all of whom—according to the producers—have already added a unique energy to the show.
Only time will tell how the show stacks up against the comic book, but it’s clear that the producers have assembled a cast that is uniquely suited for bringing the Blue Beetle world to life. With such a large and talented team, only greatness lies ahead!
