In the last week, many Windows 10 users have reported suffering from random freezing on PCs with AMD CPUs. After much speculation, it appears that a Windows 11 bug is to blame for the unusual behavior.
The bug appears to be linked to an update to the Windows 11 operating system, released in late December. Users began noticing a wide range of unusual behaviors, ranging from sudden freezes to the Windows 11 operating system simply crashing. The only common thread was that the OS was running on AMD-based CPUs.
Microsoft has since acknowledged the issue, confirming that the problem is indeed a Windows 11 bug. They have released a patch to address the problem, and recommend that users download and install it as soon as possible. However, the patch has only been available on the Insider Build of Windows 11, and not on the public release.
In the meantime, some users have reported successfully reducing their chances of the bug occurring by changing certain settings in Windows. One method is to disable AMD Cool ‘n’ Quiet, by going to the Control Panel, selecting Power Options, and then selecting Advanced. There are also some users who have reported that disabling Windows Update also helps to reduce freezing.
It remains to be seen if Microsoft will issue a public fix for the Windows 11 bug, or if the issue will remain confined to Insider Build users. Nevertheless, it is best for users to take the necessary precautions to reduce the chances of the bug occurring. If users do experience a freeze, it has been advised to simply wait for a few seconds, and then reboot the computer to restore normal operations.
