The Dungeons & Dragons movie, released in 2000, is a fantastic comedic value that can satisfy both die-hard fans and first-time viewers alike. Starring Marlon Wayans, Jeremy Irons, Thora Birch and a young Justin Whalin, the film follows a group of young adventurers who comprise the eponymous game’s iconic archetypes: a wizard (Wayans), a thief (Whalin), a druid (Birch) and an elf (Lee Arenberg). Together, they must go on a dangerous quest to locate a powerful magical artifact before it falls into the hands of an evil warlord (Irons).
Though the plot is laid out like a typical fantasy film, Dungeons & Dragons takes the sword-and-sorcery action required and infuses it with and hilarity. Marlon Wayans’ take on a wizard facing his first true fantasy adventure is delightfully funny, and his cohorts throw in zingers at every opportunity. The actors are clearly having a blast in their roles, and their enthusiasm helps to elevate the movie to greater heights. Even when the more ridiculous aspects of the script kick in, such as the appearance of an iguana with the voice of D&D founder Gary Gygax, the comedy is still taken in stride and is accepted for all its quirky glory.
