Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie returns in a big way with its 25th Anniversary, with a special edition blu-ray release. This classic movie is a cult classic and not surprisingly has developed a strong following over the years. Loosely based on the beloved Nintendo franchise of video games, the Super Mario Bros. movie stars Bob Hoskins as Mario Mario and John Leguizamo as his brother Luigi. The two brothers are not just plumbers but also heirs to a vast and powerful kingdom long forgotten by its citizens.
In the movie, Mario and Luigi are thrown into this alien kingdom where they must battle the evil Koopa to restore the order and free the kingdom from his tyranny. Along the way they are helped by an unlikely companion, a beautiful creature named Daisy. As the brothers navigate their way through the koopa’s castle, they solve puzzles and engage in the standard Mario-style of running, jumping and fighting bad guys.
The movie features a lot of action and incredible special effects, some of which look downright cheesy today. However, these effects still manage to hold up due to the movie’s timeless charm. The digital restoration of the blu-ray brings the film to life in a way that both old-school fans and newcomers can appreciate. The film’s detailed costumes and sets feel more alive than ever before due the greater clarity of the blu-ray. The characters and their surroundings are much crisper and the movie’s color palette is brighter and more vibrant.
Bob Hoskins and JOHN LEGUIZAMO had a chemistry in the movie that was a lot of fun to watch. They both delivered solid performances and portrayed Mario and Luigi as two bumbling yet lovable brothers that held a deep bond. Daisy was also a great addition to the film as she provided the perfect sidekick to the two main heroes.
The Super Mario Bros. movie remains a cult classic to this day. With its addition to Blu-ray, fans can now reminisce and newcomers can learn why its impact is still felt today. If you are looking to enter the wonderful world of Nintendo, this is definitely the place to start.
