In recent years, Amazon’s pharmacy has become a go-to option for consumers looking to save money and gain easier access to medication. As of January 2021, the company has simplified insulin savings even further with the introduction of an automated coupon system.
As part of this new system, Amazon will automatically apply coupons to insulin orders placed by customers, deducting up to $50 off the cost of insulin products. This significantly reduces the cost of medications that, for many patients, can already be very expensive.
The automatic coupons can be used for the most common forms of insulin – p-glucose, lyspro, resynthesized, and aspart – that are found at major retailers. The company says that customers must have an active Amazon Pharmacy account to qualify for the automatic coupon discounts.
The move to make insulin more affordable comes at a time when the costs associated with treating diabetes are on the rise. In 2020, the American Diabetes Association estimated that more than 34 million Americans have diabetes, a number that is expected to grow in the coming years. With the new automated coupon system, Amazon is providing its customers with an affordable option for a routine medication that can be difficult to access and expensive to purchase.
The company already offers a variety of discounts on prescription drugs and pharmacy items, but the new automated coupon system is the first of its kind. Amazon’s automated coupon system may also pressure other major retailers and big box stores to offer similar discounts for customers in need of insulin.
The availability of discounted prescription drugs has long been a challenge, as the cost of medical treatments and prescription medications can be prohibitively expensive for many people. By taking the lead on offering discounted health care products, Amazon is helping to fit the health care needs of patients who may not have the resources to buy prescription drugs at traditional retail outlets.
For those who suffer from diabetes and require insulin as part of their treatment, the introduction of Amazon’s automated coupon system offers an important step forward in ensuring the affordability of life-saving medication.
