In recent months, Microsoft has received numerous reports from Windows 11 users who have complained of severe software slowdowns when using an external solid-state drive (SSD). Microsoft has now issued a patch that appears to have solved this issue, although not entirely.
Many users reported that when they connected an external SSD device to their Windows 11-running systems, the system would experience tremendous lags when opening or closing programs. The slowdown would be particularly bad during times of high load. It was even so severe at times that the system became unusable.
Microsoft’s engineers investigated the issue and appear to have released a patch that resolves the problem. According to reports, the patch solves the issue when the external SSD is connected via a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port. However, if the external SSD is connected via a USB 3.0 port, it appears that the issue still remains.
While many users will be relieved to hear that the patch has helped, others may still be a little frustrated that the issue hasn’t been resolved entirely. This issue will likely continue to frustrate those who use external SSDs that aren’t connected to a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port, but it’s still a good sign that Microsoft is taking these reports seriously and taking steps to address the issue.
Additionally, this experience may eventually help Microsoft further refine their software in the future, especially when it comes to the usage of external storage devices. Although this particular bug has been addressed, it may not be the last time we hear about issues of SSD slowdown on Windows 11.
Overall, it does appear that Microsoft has made an effort to resolve a performance issue that was inconveniencing a lot of Windows 11 users. Hopefully this patch is a sign that the company is taking these reports seriously, and that future Windows updates will further improve the user experience.
