Recently, the Des Moines Community School District in Iowa has been making headlines due to their innovative way to approach the age-old issue of school book bans. In an effort to avoid any potential misunderstandings and protect their students from inappropriate content, the district has decided to use a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot called ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is a machine-learning algorithm with incredibly sophisticated analysis powers. Developed by the company OpenAI, ChatGPT is capable of generating detailed reports on any given piece of content, including books.
The reports generated by ChatGPT have been invaluable in helping the Des Moines Community School District determine which books should stay part of the curriculum and which books should be eliminated. According to Patrick Gray, Digital Learning Manager for the Des Moines school district, the chatbot reads through each book and provides an analysis on the content, including details of any potential language or content that might be considered offensive.
The school district has been greatly impressed by the accuracy and quality of the reports they’ve received from ChatGPT. It’s been particularly helpful when resolving seemingly grey area issues, where the school district has been uncertain about the appropriateness of a particular book, as it has eliminated the need for lengthy phone calls with outside experts.
In addition to providing book analysis reports, ChatGPT has helped to reduce the time it takes for the school district to decide whether to ban a book. By having an AI decide which books should be eliminated, the school district has been able to reduce the overall cost of their book review process and increase their efficiency.
In a statement, Patrick Gray said “ChatGPT has been so helpful with the book ban process. We are able to make informed decisions quickly and confidently, which makes the students in our community so much safer from the potentially offensive content in certain books.”
No matter how one may feel about book banning, the usage of ChatGPT is undoubtedly an interesting and innovative solution to a common problem, and it looks like this Iowa school district may be a role model for other school districts in the United States.
