Xiaomi recently unveiled their new foldable smartphone, the Mi MIX Fold, claiming that it is the world’s first dual-foldable device with an innovative full-screen design. But there’s a catch – you can’t buy it.
The Mi MIX Fold is a thinner and more compact device than Samsung’s existing foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, featuring two foldable panels of 6.52-inches and 8.01-inches each. This means the device can be used as a small 6.52-inch phone for everyday use, or unfolded to create a larger 8.01-inch tablet-style device.
The company has also packed the device with premium features such as a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888 processor, an impressive 108MP triple rear camera, and even a larger 4,820 mAh battery. Plus, it’s equipped with an amplified sound system and liquid-lens technology for improved audio and camera performance respectively.
Unfortunately, while these features make it incredibly desirable, the Mi MIX Fold is currently only available in China and there are no plans to release it anywhere else in the world, so you won’t find it in stores outside of China.
To make matters worse, while Xiaomi is enjoying success in the high-end smartphone market in China, the company is still relatively unknown in other countries, so it’s unlikely that interested buyers abroad will even get the chance to try out the Mi MIX Fold, never mind buy it.
For now, it looks like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 2 is still the only option for those looking for a foldable smartphone – for better or for worse. With that said, Xiaomi’s impressive new device could make Samsung rethink their foldable design, putting the customer experience ahead of style and hype.
