The Dungeons & Dragons Movie Is a First-Rate Comedy

The Dungeons & Dragons movie released in 2000 as a throwback to the classic tabletop game that has been a mainstay since the 70s. Despite being panned by critics at the time of its release, this cult classic is a must-watch for anyone looking for a good laugh.

The movie’s plot follows a group of misfits – Baldric (Justin Whalin), Ridley (Marlon Wayans), Marina (Thora Birch), Snails (Marlon Wayans again), and Norda (Zoe McLellan) – who come together to save the Empire of Izmir from the evil Profion, played by Jeremy Irons. Despite the cheesy plot-line and cheesy costumes, Dungeons & Dragons is a surprisingly enjoyable ride, thanks to the witty dialogue and offbeat characters.

The comedic timing is spot on throughout the movie. Rewatchable gags such as “how can you be sure he’s a knight?” and “I wasn’t talking to you Snails”, are side-splitting and add so much to the humour. It’s hard to take yourself too seriously when everyone in the movie is in character, including the jokes.

Furthermore, Dungeons & Dragons is incredibly self-aware. Characters joke about how ridiculous they look as they wander through the oddly designed levels of Profion’s castle and many montages feature to music perfectly fitting for the scene. It feels reminiscent of Monty Python movies with its zany comedy.

The movie also strikes a perfect balance between special effects and slapstick comedy. The giant, blue dragon is a treat to watch, but the visual gags, such as the “grime elevator” scene, make us chuckle with each viewing.

Whether you’re looking for a humorous nostalgia trip or just want a good laugh, Dungeons & Dragons is a must-watch for any true comedy enthusiast. With its wit and slapstick humour, it is a bonafide classic that will never get old.
