Virtual Reality, or VR, is a rapidly developing and upcoming technology promising immersive experiences like never before. But unfortunately, due to its current limitations, the technology comes with some downsides. Motion sickness is one of the major problems, caused by the misalignment of head movements and the technology’s latency. People who have tried VR often find themselves nauseous or disoriented, leading them to give up on the experience altogether.
However, it looks like the answer to this problem may be on the horizon thanks to an interesting patent filed by Apple Inc. The patent, filed under the name “Viewing a Virtual Reality Environment from Multiple Angles”, describes a system that utilizes cameras outside the headset to provide a description of the physical movement of the user’s head. This information would then be used to give a more accurate representation of the user’s movements within the virtual world.
The patent, if it does come to fruition, could be of great help in curing the current motion sickness that the technology suffers from. By supplementing the headset’s internal tracking with data from external cameras, the system should be able to better detect and adapt to a user’s head movement. This would help to prevent the types of discrepancies that have been responsible for nausea and other feelings of discomfort in the past.
Apple’s patent is indeed a novel solution to a frustrating problem and one that could prove to be pivotal in overcoming a major limitation of VR. While the patent is still in the earliest of stages, any development in this direction could be exciting news for those that wish to look towards the future of virtual reality.
