The new ‘Rhymer’ project has been created to combine traditional Scottish ballads with alien elves. The project brings together a unique blend of musical techniques which feature a combination of traditional acoustic instruments and electronic manipulation.
The lead artist of the project is Scotland based singer/songwriter Dan McKinnie. Dan has been creating Scottish stories and songs for over a decade and his experience in the genre allowed him to blend traditional Scottish elements with elements of electronic music, resulting in a unique sound that has been hailed as ‘Highland Electropop’.
The project has been well received within the underground electronic music community, as it showcases his ability to craft a unique sound from classic Scottish elements. With each track expansion upon the traditional elements in the project, additional alien elf vocal samples, and manipulated takes on classic Scottish songs such as ‘ Here We Go Looby Loo’, ‘The Skye Boat Song’ and ‘The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond’, the project’s sound is both captivating and versatile.
Dan’s main goal for the project was to create a sound which was both nostalgic and futuristic. Through the incorporation of the alien elf elements, he has achieved this. On top of this, it also offers a window into the origins of Scottish culture, as the traditional ballads are a cornerstone of traditional Scots culture and each of the ballads have their own unique story to tell.
The combination of the alien elf vocal samples and the established traditional Scottish songs will appeal to a wide range of people from those interested in the heritage of Scotland to those curious about exploring experimental music. It is this unique blend of sound that makes ‘Rhymer’ such a special project and sets it apart from anything else.
