SpaceX’s new Bandwagon program is a big threat to small launch providers

SpaceX’s recent launch of its Bandwagon program is proving to be a major disruptor in the small launch provider market and presents a big threat to existing companies. The program offers unmanned, small-satellite launches for companies and governments at a steeply discounted price and is dependent on the reusability of its Falcons 9 first-stage rockets.

SpaceX claims that its Bandwagon launch-on-demand program will revolutionize the small launch sector. Traditional launch providers typically have long lead times, high costs, and limited payloads due to the size of the rocket used. SpaceX’s service eliminates those restrictions and promises a much more competitive pricing structure for customers.

The goal of the service is to provide access to space for commercial customers at an unprecedentedly low cost. SpaceX is able to do this by leveraging the reusability of its Falcon 9 boosters, which reduce the cost of the launch significantly. These boosters can fly up to 10 missions with a single rocket, so the customer only pays a fraction of what they would for a new launch.
