Lawns at Monterey Car Week were filled with speed and tech this past week. From 12th to 17th August, 2019, some of the world’s most amazing and beautiful cars and concepts took center stage. The events held over the week included the infamous auction of the 1925 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix, a tribute to Porsche’s 70th year in existence at the Rolex Monterey Motor Sports Reunion, and the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach.
Every year, this rendezvous of speed, luxury, and technology brings together some of the most amazing and radical cars from around the globe. This year was no different, and top automotive brands like Lamborghini, McLaren, Ferrari, and more gathered in the California city to display their wonders of speed and technology.
McLaren debuted its first hybrid supercar – the McLaren Speedtail – at the weeklong car affair. This vehicle is the spiritual successor to the legendary F1 and touts a hybrid powertrain with over 1000 bhp of power. It is capable of reaching a top speed of 250 mph, and the car also has an adjustable rear spoiler and active aerodynamics to help achieve its extraordinary velocity. With a price tag of $2.25 million, only 106 units of this model will ever be made. With this price point and level of exclusivity, it’s no wonder it’s already being praised as the next generation of hyper-cars.
Lamborghini also used the Monterey stage to unveil its latest limited production model, the SCV12. This vehicle will be the pinnacle of the Lamborghini supercar lineup and will feature a hoodless design, aggressive aerodynamics and intense performances. Under its hood will be an all-new 6.5-liter V12 engine producing over 830 horsepower, which should be enough to help it reach a top speed of 208 mph. Unlike the McLaren Speedtail, only 40 units of this model will be produced, making it one of the rarest sports cars in existence.
Ferrari brought its newest concept car, the SF90 Stradale, to the event. This track-ready supercar packs a 1,000 horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain thanks to its pair of electric motors and a turbocharged V8 engine. It also features a lightweight aluminum spaceframe chassis, a luxe interior, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions for faster shifts. The SF90 Stradale will be Ferrari’s first-ever plugin hybrid supercar when it hits the streets later this year, and its performance capabilities make it an alluring choice for those looking for the ultimate driving experience.
Tech and speed were definitely the stars of the show at Monterey Car Week, with some of the most advanced designs in existence making their world debuts. From the McLaren Speedtail to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, it was a week full of automotive milestones.
