The Year Ahead in Autonomous Responsibility

The Year Ahead in Autonomous Responsibility

The emergence of autonomous vehicles has changed the way people think about the transportation industry in many ways, but one of the most important of those ways is how we think about responsibility. Autonomous vehicles are now taking on more and more responsibility for the safety, operation, performance, and maintenance of vehicles, providing us with a number of benefits while also creating a number of complex legal questions.

As 2020 kicks off, we anticipate that the year ahead will bring a number of developments in autonomous responsibility. These developments will range from changes in the legal landscape to new types of safety technologies.

First, we anticipate legal developments. As more autonomy is developed and integrated into more vehicles, the legal implications of these vehicles become increasingly complicated. Companies like Volvo have already formed partnerships with third-party liability insurers in order to create driverless vehicles. We anticipate similar developments in the year ahead, as well as the emergence of additional regulations to address the legal implications of autonomous responsibility.

Second, we anticipate the development of new technologies related to autonomous responsibility. Companies are now introducing new safety technologies for autonomous vehicles that are capable of detecting other vehicles, pedestrians, and objects with greater accuracy and in more varied environments than before. This will create a greater level of assurance that autonomous vehicles are meeting necessary standards of responsibility.

Finally, we anticipate the continued development of autonomous responsibility standards. As more autonomous vehicles are developed, the standards for measure of responsibility will become even more important. Companies like Waymo have already developed sophisticated systems that employ deep learning technologies to detect potential dangers and adjust to changing environments. We anticipate more of these types of systems to develop in the year ahead, creating a greater level of safety and responsibility for autonomous vehicles.

So, as we enter year ahead, we can expect an increasing expansion and development of autonomous responsibility. This will create a number of benefits, both in terms of safety and legal obligations, while also creating a number of complex questions that will require further study and development. It is an exciting time for the transportation industry and we look forward to seeing the further developments that the year ahead will bring.
