The Dungeons & Dragons Movie Is a First-Rate Comedy

Dungeons & Dragons, the beloved fantasy adventure role playing game, is getting the cinematic treatment. After years of speculation and false starts, the Dungeons & Dragons movie is finally a go, with a release date of July 23rd, 2021. Reactions to the news of this long-awaited movie adaptation has been mostly positive, and for good reason. Unlike previous failed attempts at making a Dungeons & Dragons film, this time the movie is in the hands of a team who knows how to make a first-rate comedy.

The team responsible for bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the silver screen is comprised of some of the best storytellers in the comedy world. The film will be directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley – the duo responsible for the hilarious comedies like Game Night and Vacation – along with Chris D’Arienzo, who wrote the musical comedy Rock of Ages.

The addition of Goldstein and Daley to the project is an especially exciting indication that the Dungeons & Dragons movie might actually be worth the 10-year wait. Their work is marked by clever dialogue, unique plots, and an effortless blend of heart and humor. Their directing style is light and easy, but always entertaining. While many have feared the Dungeons & Dragons movie might take a kitschy dive into campy territory, Goldstein and Daley’s resume points to a story that will not only roll a 20-sided die but also roll in plenty of laughs.

Further, the movie’s star-studded cast lends additional promise of a creative, funny film. The cast includes The Hangover’s Justin Bartha, Veep’s Sam Richardson, SNL’s Bobby Moynihan, plus Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana, among others. These unique personalities, combined with the trademark comedy writing skills of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, could lead to a movie that mixes a classic Dungeons & Dragons storyline with a new, genuinely funny take on superheroes.

In the end, Dungeons & Dragons is a property that carries a lot of nostalgia and nostalgia in Hollywood often results in a soggy mess of a movie. But the Dungeons & Dragons movie looks to be a much brighter prospect, with the right creatives and cast in place. Though fans will have to wait until next summer to see if the Dungeons & Dragons movie is a first-rate comedy, based on the talent involved, we can be hopeful.
