Just a few days ago, we heard that Disney was developing a live-action television series based on Jules Verne’s classic novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The series, titled Captain Nemo, was set to be an exclusive to Disney’s streaming service, Disney+. Unfortunately, it appears that Disney has decided not to move forward with the project.
The series was being developed by Jurassic World writers Derek Connolly and Emily Carmichael, with the former serving as the showrunner. The show was going to be epic in scope, exploring the origins of Nemo and detailing his ambitious quest to explore the undersea world. With tantalizing details being shared by Connolly and Carmichael, such as the possibility of underwater robots, the series had the potential to be an exciting entry in the ever-growing canon of Disney+ exclusives.
Unfortunately, it now looks as though the series is dead in the water (no pun intended). Disney has reportedly decided to not move forward with the series’ development, citing creative differences. It’s unclear why exactly the company decided to pass on the show, but in the end it apparently didn’t live up to Disney’s standards.
It’s a shame, as the team behind Captain Nemo had constructed a compelling concept that could have enriched the library of content on Disney+. Who knows, perhaps we’ll see the series resurrected in some form in the future, but for now it seems that fans will have to continue to look elsewhere for their underwater adventures.
