HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ is a video game adaptation that’s actually good

We’ve seen video game adaptations flop in the past, but HBO’s latest adaptation of The Last of Us is a refreshing change. The Last of Us, first released on Sony’s PlayStation 3 in 2013, is a critically acclaimed game from Naughty Dog. It received numerous awards from the industry and it’s no wonder that it was being adapted into a television series.

The show, which was just recently announced, is being helmed by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog Creative Director Neil Druckmann. The two are also serving as executive producers and writers on the project. This is a great indication of the show’s quality, as both men are highly skilled and respected in their fields.

The series will be set in a post-apocalyptic America, 20 years after a virus ravaged the world. The story follows a now hardened Joel and a 14-year-old Ellie as they journey across a dangerous US overgrown with plants. As with the game, their goal will be to save humanity from extinction.

As far as castings, Pedro Pascal is taking the lead role of Joel. Pascal is best known for his work as Oberyn Martell in “Game of Thrones,” and is certainly no stranger to dark characters. Additionally, Bella Ramsey will play Ellie, who has recently been seen as Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones. Both actors have proven themselves in the past and will no doubt bring something special to the show.

The Last of Us adaptation is an exciting prospect, and the source material combined with the talent involved has fans of the game and newcomers alike eagerly awaiting its premiere. That said, it’s worth noting that the show will be taking some liberties with the story, as Mazin has vowed to make the characters and storylines his own. Nonetheless, this adaptation looks set to be one of the most successful video game to TV adaptations in recent memory.
