Nintendo Switch OLED vs Nintendo Switch: what’s different?

The Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, quickly dominated the gaming landscape and has become the most sought-after gaming system. While it’s still unclear what the future holds for Nintendo’s popular hybrid system, there have been some changes to its features in recent years. Two of the biggest changes have been the introduction of an OLED display and the implementation of a revised version of the original Switch, known as the Switch Lite.

The biggest difference between the two is the display. The original Switch featured an LCD display, while the updated Switch includes an OLED display. The main advantage of an OLED display is improved visual clarity and deeper black levels. This is critical for games that require precise visuals, such as fast-paced shooters and action-adventures. The OLED screen also allows for a wider color range, resulting in brighter, more vibrant images.

Another major difference between the two is the size and weight. The original Switch is slightly more bulky and heavier than the Lite. The Switch Lite is significantly smaller and lighter, making it easier to carry around and more convenient for extended playing sessions. Additionally, the Lite is not capable of playing in tabletop mode, as it does not have a built-in kickstand.

When it comes to battery life, there is also a slight discrepancy between the two systems. The original Switch features a 3.7V 4310mAh battery, while the Switch Lite has a 3.8V 3570mAh battery. While the difference is not huge, it does result in the Lite having a slightly longer battery life than the original Switch — roughly 2-3 hours of additional playtime.

Ultimately, the choice between the original Switch and the updated Switch Lite largely comes down to personal preference. For those that prioritize power and performance, the original Switch with its OLED display is the ideal choice. On the flip side, if portability and cost are important, then the Switch Lite is the best bet. Regardless of which version you choose, there is no denying that both iterations of the Nintendo Switch offer an excellent gaming experience.
