Twitter’s broken third-party apps will be the final straw for many users

Twitter has long been one of the most popular social platforms, used by millions of people around the world. However, more recent developments have caused some users to start to question their loyalty to the platform.

In May 2021, Twitter announced that it was going to “sunset” third-party apps that allowed for use on the platform. This means that users who depend on third-party apps for features such as TweetDeck or Gab will no longer have access to these tools, forcing them to use the Twitter interface exclusively.

For many Twitter users, this was an unwelcome surprise. Third-party apps allow them to use the platform more effectively and get the most out of their experience. Without them, they feel that they are unable to access their Twitter data and manage their accounts with the same ease as before.

The loss of third-party apps has been compounded by other recent changes to the platform, such as the announcement that it would cease to count media attachments, such as photos and videos, toward the tweet character limit. This has caused many users to feel that Twitter is removing useful features in favor of an overall simplification of the platform.

For some users, the combination of these factors is too much. After seeing that their beloved third-party apps are being removed and their Twitter experience is likely to be significantly reduced, many of these users are now looking for alternative social media platforms. They feel that Twitter has betrayed them and they no longer have any trust in the platform.

Twitter may not have the catastrophic exodus of users that some have feared, but it is clear that these changes have caused harm to its reputation. Already, there are users who are ready to throw in the towel and switch to another platform. For many, this broken promise of third-party apps is the final straw.
