When Black Panther 2 was announced, fans of Wakanda and its most loyal general’s, Danai Gurira’s Okoye, rejoiced. While many were excited for the return of T’Challa and company, for many, the real anticipation was for Okoye’s return.
With the news of the return of Okoye, many were excited and hopeful for her to be the lead of her own spin-off movie. During the interview with Variety Magazine to promote her directorial debut feature, Danai Gurira didn’t confirm any plans for a spin-off movie, but she did make a vague gesture that made many speculate a potential Okoye spin-off was in the works.
Gurira said that Stacey Snider and Emerson Davis at Marvel Studios were “very generous” to her and were “very much looking at the intersection of women and African Diaspora on a larger scale.” While she seemed to be referring to larger issues of representation and inclusion, many took her comments as an indication of a bigger plan for Okoye and a spin-off movie featuring her was on the way.
The response from fans was overwhelmingly positive, and it certainly seemed as if Marvel had taken notice. Whether that means there are concrete plans for an Okoye spin-off movie yet is still to be seen, but with fans showing this much enthusiasm for the idea, it certainly looks likely that one day soon, Okoye will have her own movie. And with Danai Gurira’s keen eye for representation and empowering stories, the movie is sure to be something special.
