As more people rely on social media for communication, entertainment, and more, companies have started implementing methods of helping individuals manage their time spent on the app. Recently, Instagram has become the latest social media platform to join the fray–implementing new features designed to help users better manage their time spent on the app.
It’s a trend that’s becoming increasingly important. With nearly two billion users worldwide and 40 minutes of daily use per person, Instagram is one of the most widely used social media platforms on the planet. For some users, that time spent scrolling can lead to problems like phone addiction and lack of productivity.
So, how is Instagram attempting to manage user’s time on the app? The company has introduced several new initiatives, including:
1. Reminding users how much time they’ve spent on the app. Instagram now sends out notifications letting users know exactly how long they’ve been on the app. The idea is to help raise awareness and encourage users to take a break from scrolling if need be.
2. Introducing an activity dashboard. Instagram launched an activity dashboard where users can track and set limits for their usage. The dashboard allows users to track their daily usage, set time limits on their use, and receive reminders when they’ve reached those limits.
3. Restricting certain features. Instagram implemented a feature that restricts certain activities after a user has been on the platform for more than two hours. For example, if someone’s been on Instagram for more than two hours in a day, they will not be able to view their feed or watch stories.
These are just a few of the measures Instagram has taken to better manage user’s time on the app. Ultimately, the goal is to help individuals reduce their reliance on the platform while still allowing them to enjoy the app’s content.
So, will Instagram’s initiatives make a difference? It’s tough to say. While the measures should likely help some users reduce their reliance on the platform, it’s also possible that it won’t have an impact. Furthermore, it’s impossible to know if it will have any sort of lasting impact.
At the end of the day, it’s up to users to manage their own time on social media. While it’s nice to see companies take steps to help users, ultimately it’s the individual who must take responsibility for their time spent on the app.
