TikTok’s transparency theater

TikTok, the short-form video-sharing platform, has found massive success since its launch in 2016. With over 700 million users worldwide, it has quickly become one of the most popular social media platforms. While its popularity is undeniable, its approach to transparency is less than admirable.

Recently, TikTok has been criticized for its lack of transparency when it comes to data security and privacy. Despite having privacy policies in place, it doesn’t make it easy for users to find them or understand them. It doesn’t provide detailed information about how their data is collected and what data is being shared with third parties.

TikTok also lacks transparency when it comes to moderating content on its platform. While the company claims to have a dedicated team of content moderators to review videos, it doesn’t provide any information about how they are selected or how they decide which videos to remove. Furthermore, it doesn’t share details about how it deals with videos that violate its terms of use. These issues have been further compounded by recent reports of censorship on the platform.

While TikTok claims to be committed to transparency and user safety, their actions often speak louder than words. There have been numerous reports of the company responding to user complaints with vague, scripted responses that do not address the issue or have any tangible impact. This so-called “transparency theater” is just a way for the company to say it is committed to user safety without having to take tangible action.

TikTok has a great opportunity to make a positive impact on its users’ lives. But until it takes meaningful steps to address its lack of transparency, it risks alienating its user base. The company needs to be more open and transparent about its data collection and moderation practices if it wants to be taken seriously. Only then will it be able to truly demonstrate its commitment to user safety and trust.
