It looks like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony will skip E3 2023

It looks like the gaming giants Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony may be in for a sabbatical this year as all three companies have announced that they will be taking a break from participating in the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) for 2023. This highly anticipated event, which takes place every year, has been a major venue for gaming companies to showcase their latest products and presentations. However, it looks like this year’s show will be just a little different as Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo will all be sitting out, making it the first time since 1996 that the three mainstays have simultaneously opted out.

There has been no official announcement yet regarding why all three companies have made this surprising decision, although there have been some murmurs of Microsoft and Sony potentially looking to part ways with the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which organizes the expo each year. It was speculated that some of their decisions may have been in response to the financial crisis that ensued in 2020 due to the pandemic, which is still largely affecting all facets of the entertainment industry.

The news of the companies skipping the show is set to have a large scale impact on the event in recent years. Without the presence of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, E3 will have a more diminished presence with more boutiques and indie game publishers taking the reign as the primary representatives. It will also severely limit the audience’s exposure to the latest gaming announcements and reveals, as it was previously a platform for these companies to showcase their newest products and titles.

It is currently unclear if Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo will commit to any other form of advertisement outside of E3, though the general consensus is that all companies are most likely looking to focus on more flexible and cost-effective online platforms to present their new releases. This could potentially change the layout of the gaming industry and present different avenues of marketing and information dissemination.

Although gaming enthusiasts may be disappointed with the absence of three of the industry’s most prominent names, on the positive side, it presents an opportunity for smaller game companies to get the exposure that has, for so long, been dominated by the few big giants. We can only wait and see the results from this shift and hope for the best!
