This Week in Apps: Instagram’s founders’ new app, another Twitter rival, Biden admin criticizes app stores

In the past week of apps, there have been some notable movements across the major app stores. On the one hand, Instagram’s co-founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, launched a new app, while on the other, a little-known Twitter rival, Codio, appeared on the scene. Meanwhile, the Biden Administration has taken aim at both Apple and Google’s app store policies in response to their handling of Fortnite.

Systrom and Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram, have launched a new venture called Threads, an app for messaging and sharing among close friends. The app emphasizes privacy and security, allowing users to select which friends’ stories and posts they will see. It will also enable users to quickly communicate with their nearest and dearest using a series of “quick replies”. The app is currently available for download on both iOS and Android.

Meanwhile, another challenger to Twitter has appeared on the scene. Codio is a messaging and news platform that aims to make it easy for individuals and organisations to connect with their followers in a secure and transparent manner. The app has seen a surge in downloads since launch, with some users vowing to make the switch away from Twitter due to its perceived lack of security. The app is currently available on iOS and Android.

It’s not all good news in the app world, however. The Biden Administration has come out swinging at both Apple and Google’s App Store policies this week. The US Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission have taken issue with the way both companies have handled the Fortnite app controversy, accusing them of using their respective app stores to stifle competition. This move is likely to set the stage for further legal battles between app store owners and developers, with an outcome that could have a significant impact on the app ecosystem.

Overall, it’s been a volatile week in the world of apps. Between Instagram’s co-founders launching a new app, an up-and-coming Twitter rival hitting the scene, and the Biden administration targeting several app store policies, there’s plenty to keep an eye on in the weeks ahead.
