As the electric vehicle market continues to heat up, automakers have begun to partner up for mutually beneficial projects. But the partnership between electric vehicle maker Rivian and German auto giant Mercedes-Benz may have hit a snag.
The two companies had announced plans to collaborate on an upcoming electric van, but that arrangement appears to have been put on hold indefinitely. The news surprised many since the partnership seemed mutually beneficial. Rivian brings experience in designing and producing electric vehicles while Mercedes-Benz can provide the engineering and manufacturing capabilities to build a top-of-the-line electric van.
So what happened? Industry experts believe the partnership could have been derailed by additional costs associated with the project. Reuters reports that Rivian would have had to invest heavily in technology to create the van, and the returns wouldn’t have met Mercedes-Benz’s expectations. There’s also the fact that Rivian and Mercedes-Benz only agreed to a rough outline of the project and had yet to sign a formal contract.
Ultimately, both companies may decide the potential costs to invest in the project outweigh the benefits. Mercedes-Benz could choose to focus more on developing and building its own electric van market segments, and Rivian may decide to focus on other projects that have more promise in terms of returns.
In any case, the decision to put the partnership on hold is surprising given the promise that the project could have held. Rivian had already made waves in the electric vehicle market with its vehicle lineup, and Mercedes-Benz is one of the world’s leading automakers. Together, the two companies could have created a successful electric van.
However, for the time being, it appears that the electric van project is on an indefinite hold. We’ll have to wait and see if the two companies revisit the matter in the future and find a way to make it work.
