Google Maps launches Immersive View in five cities, will roll out ‘glanceable directions’ soon

Tech giant Google recently unveiled the newest update for its popular Maps app – Immersive View. This powerful new feature had its initial rollout in five cities across the globe – Bangalore, Berlin, Osaka, Sao Paulo, and Sydney. This feature features a 360-degree view of the city streets and streetside cafes, enabling users to have a more interactive view of their city’s attractions as they plan their trips.

Google has also announced that they will be making use of a new technology feature – ‘glanceable directions’ soon in the Maps app. The feature will enable users to have their current route and navigation information presented in a glanceable format, making it easier to read and interpret the directions. This will enable users to multitask while keeping a tab on their navigation needs.

The new Immersive View has been made available for landmark attractions like Big Ben in London, the São Paulo Cathedral in Brazil, André Citroën Park in France, and more. This feature also comes with photo-realistic imagery, detailed street signs and street-lamps, and diverse points of interests which will add richness to the experience.

The collection of data for the Immersive View feature was carried out with help from visiting professional photographers to the cities, who captured high-resolution images from towers, aircrafts, and poles around the cities. Machine learning algorithms were then used to stitch the captured images in an accurate view to make them compatible with the app.

Google has also stated that they’re continuously updating the feature and its capabilities, with plans to roll out to other cities soon. Google Maps has already become a go-to platform for travelers and locals alike in recent times; and with the support of these powerful features – Immersive View and Glanceable Directions – this app is sure to remain an important tool for many.
