As Star Trek fans eagerly await the much anticipated return of Picard, the beloved Starfleet captain-turned-diplomat, they may be wondering just what to expect when the highly anticipated new series in the franchise debuts. After all, a lot has changed in the intervening decades.
In the time since Picard’s last adventure, the galaxy and its inhabitants have changed significantly – both politically and ethically. Given his lifetime commitment to the ideas of justice, peace, and hope, it won’t be a surprise if Picard comes back with an agenda that seeks to hold those responsible for what has happened in the universe to account.
Picard’s return may bring with it more than the usual challenges. We know from the beginning of Season 1 of The Next Generation all the way through to the end of Star Trek: Nemesis that Picard was often grappling with the sins of the past. Even as he rose through the ranks and became more successful in his Starfleet career, things that happened in the past continued to haunt him.
It will be very interesting to see what kind of issues Picard faces now that he is returning. Will he be able to right some wrongs, or will he be forced to live with the consequences of past events? Will his relationships with those around him be changed? Will his old friendships, rivalries, and foes still hold?
We can only speculate, but it’s exciting to think of the possibilities. With so much time having passed, and a lot of uncertainty in the universe, it’s likely that Picard is coming back with a strong conviction to help wherever he can. As one of the most beloved characters in the entirety of the Star Trek franchise, it will certainly be interesting to see the consequences of his past and the new challenges he’ll face.
