Researchers will get access to TikTok data — pending company approval

In recent news, researchers have been given the opportunity to access data from the popular media-sharing platform, TikTok. The popular app has now allowed for researchers to reqest access to data for research purposes, pending approval from the company.

This move comes amidst rising concerns about the potential privacy risks associated with using the popular app – especially as social media giants have been subjected to increased scrutiny by regulators in light of Facebook and Cambridge Analytica’s data scandal. Thanks to the new move, researchers will now have the chance to access valuable consumer and user data which could help them better understand the activity that goes on within the app and how it affects individuals, as well as making sure that the app uses user data responsibly.

Access to data from the platform is granted on a case-by-case basis and potential researchers will have to submit a proposal explaining who they are and what they are looking to use the data for. All projects that use the data must reflect TikTok’s “overarching goal of technological innovation, promoting user safety and privacy, and furthering positive values including creativity and self-expression.”

TikTok has also been clear in their stance that any data accessed by researchers will remain anonymous and confidential. Projects which involve data of minors will only be approved if the team behind it is taking extra steps to protect the privacy and safety of those involved, as well as upholding the highest standards of ethical research.

Overall, giving researchers access to data from the app has been widely seen as a positive move. Not only will this help ensure that TikTok data is used responsibly but it will also shed some light on user behaviour within the platform, which could lead to some more groundbreaking projects and research in the field of social media and consumer behaviour.
