7 Things We Learned From NASA’s Wildly Successful Artemis 1 Mission

NASA’s recent Artemis 1 mission, the first mission of the Artemis program and the first launch of the new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, was an immense success.

The powerful new launch vehicle, carrying the Orion capsule on a three-week test flight to the Moon, completed the necessary steps for NASA to progress with the next stage of its plans for a crewed lunar mission in 2022.

From this latest mission, here are seven key things we learned:

1. The SLS Rocket Works
The launch of the SLS rocket marked a major milestone for its development and was an important step in the goal of launching crewed missions to the Moon. The first stage of the rocket completed a successful test launch and it was an awe-inspiring sight to behold.

2. The Orion Capsule Performed Well
The Orion capsule, designed to transport people to the Moon and other deep-space destinations, underwent its first long-term mission. Its performance was impressive and an indication that it is ready for future missions.

3. Advanced Technology Was Used
The mission used a variety of cutting-edge technologies, such as 3-D printed parts and advanced solar arrays, to enable it to function in space. These technological innovations will be critical to opening up the universe to exploration.

4. Scientific Research Was Conducted
The mission included scientific experiments conducted during the flight and upon its return. This research will provide valuable data to help further our understanding of the Moon and deep space.

5. Crew Safety Was Confirmed
The mission allowed access to critical spacecraft systems and a demonstration that crew safety protocols are in place. This was essential to proving the safety of astronauts on long-term missions.

6. Cooperation With International Partners Was Achieved
The Artemis mission allowed for cooperation with international partners, including the European Space Agency. This cooperation was essential in the development of the powerful SLS rocket and the Orion capsule.

7. We Are One Step Closer to Returning to the Moon
The Artemis mission demonstrated that the technology to safely return to the Moon is available. With the mission complete, NASA can now start thinking about the next steps for this historic journey.

The Artemis 1 mission was a huge success and will serve as an important launchpad for the next steps in humanity’s exploration of deep space. With the powerful new SLS rocket and the successful testing of the Orion capsule, it is a clear indication that we are now one step closer to humankind’s return to the Moon.
