It seems most movie-goers absolutely loved Fox’s 2020 sci-fi comedy Free Guy, starring the hilarious Ryan Reynolds. The unique film saw Reynolds playing the NPC of a bank teller in an open-world video game, who gradually become self-aware. It was pretty well-received, especially because its concept put a twist on the classic action hero narrative.
Unfortunately, it didn’t reach its box office goal, and received lukewarm reviews from critics. This was rather disappointing news for fans of the movie, and it seemed like a potential sequel was unlikely.
Well, there’s some hope now, as Free Guy is getting a sequel. Producer Greg Berlanti recently revealed that he and the film’s director Shawn Levy are in early talks to greenlight a follow-up. Unfortunately, one key person involved in the project seems less enthusiastic.
Ryan Reynolds recently shared his thoughts on the idea of a Free Guy sequel. He told press that while he’d love to work with Levy and his team again, he doesn’t think a follow-up is necessary. He said “I don’t think we need a sequel. Sometimes it’s better to just leave a thing alone and let it linger in people’s memories like some kind of free-floating double rainboom.”
Reynolds’ stance makes sense, given the mixed reception of the first movie. But it’s still nice to know that he’s not opposed to working with the team again in the future. Many fans of the original film may be excited to see how Levy and company will work to make the sequel stand out from its predecessor. Only time will tell.
