In 2019, Spotify set a new record. For the first time ever, over 100 songs earned the “Billions Club” distinction – meaning they accrued over one billion streams on the platform. With a deep dive into the list of the 128 songs that reached this milestone, we explore some of the immense popularity of these upbeat and catchy tunes.
Global hitmakers such as Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, and Billie Eilish dominated the list. Post Malone’s 2018 song “Sunflower,” with its reggae-infused beat, skyrocketed higher than anything else this year with 1.364 billion streams. It was followed by Sheeran’s “Shape of You” with 1.304 billion and Eilish’s “bad guy” with 1.179 billion.
But the list also speaks to the power of the Latinx community. A whopping 21 of the 128 songs on the list of billion-streamers were in Spanish, led by Daddy Yankee’s “Con Calma” featuring Snow, sitting third on the list at 1.285 billion streams. And it’s not just the Latin music charts either. South Korean K-pop giants, BTS, have four songs on the list – including “Boy with Luv” with Halsey and “IDOL” both at 1.069 billion.
Further down, there’s some exciting little surprises like The Weeknd “Blinding Lights” with 1.052 billion and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” with 1.039 billion. It just goes to show that the charts are open to any kind of artist that can secure buzz and an audience for their music.
