As one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the world, the Oscars is undoubtedly one of the most talked about events in the entertainment industry. With such a huge focus placed on the event each year, it can be hard to assess the relative importance and significance of one award show compared to another. That’s why we’ve decided to rank the Oscars from best to worst, based on how respected they are in the entertainment industry, as well as how much of an impact they have in terms of public perception.
The best Oscars ceremony is unequivocally the 89th Academy Awards. Despite being hosted by quite a divisive figure, the host Jimmy Kimmel, the show was well received and considered to be an overall success. The highlights of the show were definitely the surprise appearance of Ryan Gosling and the memorable performance of ‘La La Land’ by Justin Timberlake.
Coming in at second is the 88th Academy Awards. Hosted by Chris Rock, this ceremony was no less impressive than the previous one, although it was marred by the controversial lack of nominations for actors of colour. Nevertheless, it was still a great show and many memorable moments were to be had, in particular the ‘Take My Breath Away’ musical number.
Third and fourth are the 87th and 86th Academy Awards, respectively. Both of these shows featured some great moments and performances, though neither was quite as memorable as the previous two. Nevertheless, both events were well received, with the 87th being particularly praised for its combination of humor and emotion, and the 86th being considered to be a great homage to Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Fifth on our list is the 85th Academy Awards, which saw Whoopi Goldberg as its host. Although the show wasn’t as praised as the other years, it was still considered to be mostly successful, with many critics noting the interplay between Whoopi and Seth MacFarlane, who delivered unforgettable renditions of ‘Our Father’ and ‘This Is Me’ during the show.
Following that, the 84th Academy Awards is considered the ‘worst’ of the last ten years. Hosted by Billy Crystal, the show really lacked energy and was criticized for its lack of good material. However, it was still an enjoyable show and marked the end of a great year for film.
Finally, the 82nd and 83rd Academy Awards have to be mentioned too, as both of these shows were quite successful. Although they aren’t as well remembered as some of the other shows, they still had some great highlights, culminating in a wonderful tribute to the director/producer John Hughes during the 83rd show.
All in all, although there have been some more successful and exciting Oscar ceremonies than others, the event is still considered to be the most important night of the year for many in the entertainment industry. With such a fantastic legacy, there’s no doubt that the Oscars will remain one of the top awards ceremonies for many years to come.
