In a recent move that has riled up the gaming community, Epic Games—the publisher of Rock Band—has officially announced its plans to shut down the online servers of the popular music game.
For years, Rock Band has been one of the premier video game franchises – combining rhythm-based gameplay with real-life instruments to create an entirely unique and immersive experience for fans. With an ever-expanding song library and a selection of instruments and peripherals to choose from, the Rock Band franchise allowed players from all around the world to come together and jam out to some of their favorite tunes.
But all good things must come to an end, and Rock Band’s time with Epic Games is no different. On January 18th, all online services for the Rock Band games will be shut down—meaning, no more online leaderboards, no more downloadable content, and no more online multiplayer.
That being said, the show is far from over. Despite the shuttering of Epic Games’ online services, console versions of Rock Band will still be playable offline. As a bonus, Rock Band’s expansive music library will remain intact, even as Epic makes its way out of the Rock Band business.
Also, DLC purchased prior to January 18th can still be downloaded and played—it’s just the online & leaderboard functions that will no longer be available after that date.
Ultimately, while it’s sad to see an iconic endeavor like Rock Band at the end of its online run, the game still lives on in the hearts and minds of its fans, who will fondly remember the good times they had with their digital bandmates. Though the show may be over for now, the Rock Band spirit will never die.
