Earlier this year, LEGO released a new set based on the Nintendo GameCube, allowing fans of the classic console to build their own miniature version of the system. While this LEGO version looks great, it would be fairly useless unless it could actually play games… and that’s where things get interesting.
Yes, in order for this LEGO GameCube to actually be able to play games, an actual GameCube was sacrificed. That’s right, LEGO had to tear apart an original GameCube in order to receive parts that could power up the LEGO version. Those needed parts included a disc drive, a motherboard, and various other components. By taking apart a real GameCube, they were able to get the pieces they needed to make the LEGO version come to life.
The result? A fully functional LEGO GameCube with an original disc drive and a color LCD screen. It’s a limited edition piece, made using original GameCube parts, that has been hand-crafted with loving care. As such, it can actually play games — like a classic GameCube made entirely out of LEGO.
The real GameCube died so that the LEGO version could be born, but no tears need be shed: the original sections that made up the console will now live on in the hands of the people who purchase this LEGO set. In the end, the dream of playing a GameCube made entirely from LEGO has become a reality, thanks to the creative minds at LEGO and the sacrifice of a GameCube. It may be a miniature version of the console, but it’s still a great way to relive the classic console days of the early 2000s.
