Science fiction is one of the most popular genres in literature and film, with books and movies that captivate and entertain millions of readers and viewers. Many of the most iconic science fiction characters, such as Star Wars’s Luke Skywalker and Star Trek’s Spock, are well-known and beloved by a wide range of fans. But behind all these characters lies the mind of a brilliant person who created them – the genius of science fiction writer and filmmaker, Isaac Asimov.

Isaac Asimov was an American Jewish scientist, one of the most famous writers of science fiction and fantasy, who has written or contributed to more than 500 books. He wrote classics such as “I Robot,” “The Foundation Trilogy,” and “The Caves of Steel,” which combined elements of science fiction, fantasy, and hard science. Asimov was one of the most influential writers of his time and his creative works continue to inspire millions of readers to this day.

In 2019 a documentary was released entitled ‘Immer, Zlaz’, directed by the multi-award winning Spanish filmmaker Ángel Esteban. The film takes a unique look into the private life of Asimov and his world, providing an intimate portrait of the man behind the enduringly influential works of science fiction. Through a combination of archive footage, interviews, and personal recordings of Asimov reading from his own works, the documentary paints a vivid picture of the life and times of the iconic science fiction creator.

The documentary begins by charting Asimov’s remarkable life from his birth in Russia in 1920 to his life as a refugee in America before he became the famous author he’s known as today. Through interviews with family members, colleagues, and fans of Asimov, ‘Immer, Zlaz’ uncovers the small moments in his life that made him the genius he was. For example, the film reveals the influence his father had on him, having encouraged him to become an autodidact as a child to expand his knowledge.

The second half of the documentary is dedicated to the science fiction author’s writing and the themes that made him an icon of the genre. In-depth analysis of more than 60 of Asimov’s works is woven throughout the film, showing why he was so influential in the world of science fiction. The documentary also looks at his philosophical ideas and imaginings, exploring the concept of a future ruled by robots, which was written about by Asimov in his book ‘I, Robot.’

The documentary ends with a poignant and powerful speech from Asimov about the power of science fiction and its ability to show us how to change the future. This moment encapsulates why Asimov’s works continue to be so deeply admired, touching on themes of religion, philosophy, space exploration, and humanity. ‘Immer, Zlaz’ provides an invaluable insight into the life of the science fiction genius, and much-needed reminder of his timeless influence within the genre.
