Censorship, lockdowns, arbitrary bans — Twitter is turning into the China of social media

The world today is governed by technology. Everything from communication to entertainment and even politics is dependent on the internet. Social media has revolutionized the way we live our lives, to the point where we sometimes share too much information. Because of this, social media platforms like Twitter are increasingly taking drastic steps to control the information available to us. Censorship, lockdowns, and arbitrary bans are some of the measures the platform is taking, leading many to refer to Twitter as a ‘digital China’.

One of the first and most commonly used tactics to control the information on Twitter is censorship. Recently, Twitter began censoring tweets that contained creative interpretation of foreign policy-related events. The platform is doing this by limiting the reach of such tweets, thereby decreasing their visibility. Twitter has also implemented measures that block or limit accounts that share certain types of content. This effectively silences those who speak out against certain policies, ideologies, or interests.

Apart from censorship, Twitter has also been using lockdowns and arbitrary bans to control user activity. According to reports, accounts have been locked down for “violating Twitter’s community guidelines,” even if the content posted did not seem to violate these. Additionally, Twitter has been banning accounts without warning, many of which were run by women and journalists. This latest move has been criticized for its lack of transparency, further solidifying the notion that Twitter is becoming more and more like China.

The issues of censorship, lockdowns, and arbitrary bans have caused many to raise their concerns over the increasingly restrictive regulations imposed by Twitter. It has led to a situation where free speech and expression is being suppressed, which is something we all should be worried about. As more Twitter users become aware of these issues, they will hopefully pressure the platform to create policies that are more conducive to a free and open online community.

Therefore, it is important to recognize that Twitter is transforming into a digital China. The platform has been taking drastic measures to control the information that we have access to, and it is time for us to take notice of this. By raising awareness about these issues and pressuring the platform to create better policies, we can ensure that Twitter remains an open and accessible platform for all.
