2K’s Lego Racers successor could give Mario Kart a run for its money

2K’s Lego Racers successor could give Mario Kart a run for its money

With the upcoming re-release of Lego Racers, one of the first and most popular entries in the Lego video game franchise, many fans of the game have been wondering if it deserved to be successful enough to receive a sequel that could stand up to the legendary Mario Kart franchise.

Developed by 2K Games, Lego Racers was and is still a crowd favorite, appreciated both for its mechanics and its blocky, Lego-inspired aesthetic. Racers were challenged to build their own race cars out of virtual Lego pieces and then race them in a top-down, arcade drag-style across a variety of color-themed worlds. At the time, Lego Racers proved to be revolutionary, becoming a major success and inspiring a similar game style which is now referred to as “building racers.”

With an influx of Lego games released in the later years, a potential sequel to Lego Racers could hit a home run all over again. Instead of a game that functions similarly to its predecessor, 2K could take a more modern approach and implement recently-imagined mechanics such as more complex vehicle-building, multiple game modes, leaderboards and more. Taking the current racing world by storm, a significantly more expansive re-imagining of Lego Racers could be a real threat to Mario Kart.

Although the potential for a sequel to the game is not known and no announcements have been made, the game could be done justice if the team over at 2K was devoted to the task. With a radically different style of racing, custom building and experiential exploration, the new game could introduce a far more complex, mature style of Lego-themed gaming than ever before. Undoubtedly, this could be a powerful competitor in the racing genre and could easily take on the likes of Mario Kart if done right.

Of course, it’s hard to gauge just how big of a response a new Lego Racers game might get, but the potential is there and it could definitely give Mario Kart fans a run for their money. With 2K’s experience and current technology, such a game could be an exciting, thrilling venture with far more adventure and complexity than ever before.

Assuming that the game is to be taken seriously, one can imaging the kind of money and effort that will be put into the project and should look out for potential announcements from the game devs themselves. Until then, let’s stay hopeful for a potential sequel to one of the greatest and most beloved Lego games of all time.
