2022 was an interesting year for the gaming industry. Many gamers have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new generation of consoles, but for the Nintendo Switch, 2022 was a year of disappointment.
The Nintendo Switch was first released in 2017, so it was entering its fifth year when 2022 came around. But, despite having a good library of games, the Switch’s hardware was starting to show its age. It was clear that the Switch was no match for the more powerful consoles of the next generation.
The biggest disappointment in the Switch’s performance was the graphical capabilities. It was obvious that the hardware was not up to par with that of the PS5 and Series X. Graphically intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077 were unplayable on the Switch, and even simpler games were plagued with frame rate drops and stutter. This was clearly disappointing for fans of the system who had been hoping for an upgrade.
The Nintendo Switch also lacked in terms of other features. It was not capable of 4K resolution, and it was limited in terms of storage, with the maximum capacity being 32GB. This made it difficult to store all the latest games, as they often take up more space than the limited storage could provide.
Furthermore, the Switch online service was lacklustre. It had fewer features than the Xbox and PlayStation services, and was often unreliable. This was particularly disappointing for those who wanted to build up a competitive presence on the console.
Clearly, 2022 was a year of missed opportunities for the Switch. It had a good library of games and an enthusiastic fanbase, which it let down as its hardware failed to match the power of the new generation of consoles. It really goes to show that older hardware cannot keep up with the rapidly advancing technology, and eventually has to be put out to pasture.
