When it comes to playing around with technology, it can be tempting to explore the unknown. But one journalist learnt the hard way that it can be a dangerous game.
Recently, a journalist, who had been writing a series of investigative pieces, received an unmarked USB drive by mail. Believing that the drive could contain vital information related to his investigation, the journalist plugged it into his computer without taking the necessary precautions. However, he soon realised that this was not a wise move – the drive exploded in his face.
The drive in question was a malicious piece of hardware designed to deliver an electric shock to whoever plugged it in. The journalist was lucky not to be more seriously injured as a result of the blast. Unfortunately, the reporter didn’t have any security measures in place to detect and protect against this type of attack.
In response to this incident, it’s important for people to be aware of the dangers of plugging in unknown USB drives. In fact, the National Cyber Security Centre in the United Kingdom has issued the following advice:
– Ensure that all devices and connections that you use are secure.
– When using USB devices, consider using a dedicated USB port that won’t be as easily accessible to criminals or malicious hackers.
– Always use up-to-date anti-virus software and scan all devices, including USB drives, before using them.
This journalist would have been much safer had he followed these steps. So, if you’re thinking of plugging in an unknown USB drive, make sure that you’re taking the necessary precautions – it could save you from an unpleasant experience.
