Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is great — you just have to roll with it

Dungeons & Dragons is an incredibly popular tabletop role-playing game. Proudly celebrating its 45th year in 2020, D&D continues to inspire and bring joy to those who commit to its mechanics, narrative and game-play. One of the latest turns for the franchise is the introduction of “Honor Among Thieves”, a campaign set across two books which is designed to take players through a fun-filled adventure in the rolling hills of Midsommar – a vibrant and colorful cultural melting pot of dwarves and gremlins.

The core story of Honor Among Thieves follows the cliché of a group of adventurers being hired by a mysterious figure. This time, however, the group are tasked with recovering an infamous artifact from an infamous thief by gathering clues, engaging in puzzles and searching for hidden objects. This investigation leads them through a world of castles, lairs and a variety of friendly and not-so-friendly NPCs.

The game-play mechanics are simple and intuitive, making it very easy for both new and seasoned players to enjoy. Dungeons & Dragons rules are used to adjudicate combat, exploration and the interactions between characters and the world. These rules are simple enough to allow new players to pick up the game quickly while veterans can still find enough challenge in the rules to provide a decent level of challenge. Additionally, players can customize the character’s abilities and equipment to suit their play style, allowing them to make thematically appropriate modifications to their characters.

In addition to the core game-play, Honor Among Thieves also leans heavily into the social aspects of the game. Players are encouraged to role-play the investigations into the disappearance of the artifact and negotiate with the various NPCs they meet in their journeys. This aspect of the game has been praised by players as it allows players to role-play their characters and really showcase their storytelling abilities.

Ultimately, we think that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a great campaign for both new and veteran players alike. The game is a great example of how to make a fantasy-style adventure accessible to people of all types of hobby skill levels, and provides just enough challenge to keep everyone interested. If you’ve ever considered giving D&D a go, this campaign is a great place to start.
