In a recent report, Apple staff are said to be expressing their doubts about the company’s upcoming mixed-reality headset, dubbed “Oreo”, only months ahead of its launch.
According to Bloomberg sources within the company, several Apple engineers have raised concerns about the product and are questioning whether it will be ready by the target launch date.
The headset, which has been in the works for several years now, was expected to launch later this year. But according to sources, the staff worries have delayed the project, pushing the launch back to an unspecified later date.
The Oreo headset is said to be capable of bringing Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) capabilities to the user, allowing them to interact with an on-screen environment as if it were a part of the real world.
However, the company’s engineers are apparently worried that the product isn’t up to par and not ready to launch. Some of them have even reportedly proposed additional rounds of tests to make sure it works properly and is ready for prime time.
Despite the engineers’ doubts, Apple is still very optimistic about the project and CEO Tim Cook is said to be confident in the success of the Oreo headset. The project has reportedly cost the company upwards of $100 million and is being developed by a core team of just over 1,000 engineers — a larger team than is normally allocated for Apple’s products.
It remains to be seen whether the engineers’ doubts are warranted and whether Apple will be able to meet its target launch date for the Oreo headset. Until more information is released, we’ll just have to wait to find out.
