In a world of ever-evolving technology and digital accessibility, Wikipedia just gave us another sign that the future is indeed upon us. On October 5, 2018, the popular free online encyclopedia introduced their new sound logo, drawing the attention of social media users everywhere.
The sound logo, a combination of striking tones and light chimes, was designed in collaboration with American electro-pop artist, composer and sound designer, Jeremy Bailey. According to Bailey, the logo was designed to be “representative of the collective knowledge, both audibly and aesthetically” of Wikipedia.
The chimes, which range in pitch and tones, evoke the idea of a “harmonic resonance” that reflects the depth and breadth of Wikipedia’s expansive collection of information. The sound logo, unlike sonic branding such as jingles that are often used to memorialize brands and companies, is designed to provide auditory stimulation and inspiration rather than a catchy memo-style phrase. Furthermore, Bailey states that the sound logo also alludes to the way in which technology is getting smarter, faster and more efficient over time.
The world’s largest encyclopedia concluded in announcing the logo that it will be used in a variety of different settings, including the opening stanza for their new app Wikivoice and on other platforms and products. While a few social media users felt that this birth of a new sound logo was unnecessary, many people were enthused by the novelty it brought to the iconic brand. It’s clear that Wikipedia is not standing still in the ever-changing world of technology and entertainment, and the new sound logo is just one more sign of that.
