Twitter’s $1,000 checkmark will be free for the 10,000 most-followed companies

On Tuesday, Twitter announced a major update: The company would be offering their signature blue checkmark to 10,000 of the most-followed companies — at no cost.

The $1,000 checkmark, which has historically been available to a limited number of public figures and brands to get verified, had been a source of controversy in recent years as select influencers and companies with significant reach were able to pay for their verification. That’s about to change.

In a statement, Twitter said that it was their mission to make Twitter a place for everyone, and that the social media giant was proud to open the blue checkmark to verified to numerous brands and organizations.

Twitter will be allowing verified accounts to leverage the social media platform to share authentic stories and voice concerns important to their business. To be eligible for the free checkmark, companies must be followed by more than 100,000 people.

This initiative serves two purposes for Twitter. On the one hand, it will help eliminate the potential for scams and fraud. On the other hand, it will make it easier for companies to find each other and collaborate on projects.

In addition to the 10,000 companies that will be eligible for the free checkmark, Twitter will continue to offer verified accounts on a case-by-case basis. Companies that require verification must still submit a detailed application and explain why they believe they deserve the mark.

The announcement of the new $1,000 checkmark signals is a positive step forward for Twitter and the companies it serves. It will help make Twitter a safer and more reliable platform, while also encouraging collaboration across industry leaders. All in all, it’s a plan that seems to benefit everyone involved.
