Jeep is doubling down on plug-in hybrids with the 2024 Wrangler 4xe

Jeep, the iconic American off-road brand, is doubling down on its electric offerings with the release of the all-new plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe for model year 2024. The plug-in hybrid option is an addition to the existing gas- and diesel-powered Wrangler models, allowing customers the opportunity to opt into an electric-capable model with increased fuel economy and lower emissions.

The Wrangler 4xe features a hybrid powertrain that combines a 2-liter turbocharged I-4 engine mated to an electric motor, putting out 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, which far exceeds the 270 hp and 295 lb-ft offered by the 392 V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392. The Wrangler 4xe is available in a two- or four-door configuration and is expected to offer a combined fuel economy rating of 70 MPGe, giving it an edge over the gas-powered 4-cylinder models, which are only rated at 30 mpg combined.

The Wrangler 4xe also boasts an all-electric driving range of 25 miles on battery power alone, potentially giving it an edge over other off-road capable rivals in terms of fuel efficiency. The plug-in hybrid also adds additional capabilities to the Wrangler’s feature list, such as selectable terrain modes and the ability to drive on electric-only power.

Jeep is also leaning into the unique advantages of electric powertrain technology with the Wrangler 4xe, offering features such as a 4×4 low setting that drops the Wrangler’s center of gravity and better clearance. This could be especially beneficial when driving off-road, as the low setting allows for more nimble movement in tight spaces.

All in all, with the addition of the Wrangler 4xe, Jeep is looking to continue its tradition of being a trailblazer in the off-road market, while also meeting the growing demand for low-emissions and efficient vehicles. The rugged capability and dependable performance of the iconic Wrangler, combined with the modern advantages of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, make the Wrangler 4xe the ultimate off-roader for the modern era.
