If you’re a fan of classic tabletop RPGs and the 1980s, you can now relive the nostalgia through the new Dungeons & Dragons movie. The ‘80s crew of avid players have recently revived their treasure-hunting adventures, and are revisiting the world of Faerûn one monster-battling session at a time.
The team of five – Bonnie, Marcy, Custer, Alfred and Eike – have had a longstanding affection for D&D since their earliest gaming days. Bonnie, the Dungeon Master, has fond memories of developing imaginative settings and storylines. Marcy has always maintained an affinity for the game, appreciating the chance to explore her creativity. Custer and Alfred, meanwhile, more often prioritize opportunities to test their battle strategies against fantastical creatures. And Eike revels in the sheer wonderment of the game’s ever-expanding universe.
The group jumped at the chance to re-immerse themselves in the game when they discovered the new movie. “It was like stepping back in time,” Custer recalled. “We never thought Hollywood would make a movie based on the game we all love and remember so fondly.”
While the movie didn’t have quite the same feel as the old-fashioned role-playing, the new production still managed to captivate the players with its bespoke storylines, picturesque set designs and thrilling encounter encounters, as well as its array of powerful heroes. The gang especially enjoyed the thoughtful cinematic nods to their favorite D&D editions – from the fourth to the fifth – and the chance to reminisce on their favorite tales of yore.
The ‘80s D&D crew loves that the movie has reassured them in their promise to “Never split the party.” As they continue to engage in delightful campaigns with their beloved characters, they’re still touting the importance of wholesome gaming, forging just as many friendships on-screen as they did off.
Overall, the new Dungeons & Dragons movie brought Bonnie, Marcy, Custer, Alfred and Eike back to the days of character-building, exploration and mystery-solving. Once again, these players are daring to enter a portal and discover the secrets of Faerûn.
