Climate change is an issue that is quickly becoming one of the world’s most pressing problems. With an intense focus on countries that are considered major emitters of greenhouse gases, many have taken note of the irony that one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters is hosting a key United Nations climate meeting.
The United States has long been seen as one of the worst polluters in the world and has been drastically behind other nations when it comes to reducing emissions. This fact has complicated many of the climate discussions, as it is difficult to get a unified position when one of the major emitters is not on board with reducing emissions.
Though the US has historically been the major blocker for any environmental efforts, President Biden has made it clear he plans to change the US policy, and even reversed many of his predecessor’s decisions. In an unexpectedly swift move, the US has signed a pledge to cut emissions significantly by 2030, making it the first major economy to officially enter the global climate deal.
This pledge, coupled with the announcement that the US would host a UN climate meeting, has been met with surprise and hope. While there is no question that the US has much to answer for in terms of its past emissions, the fact that it is taking a leadership role in the UN climate talks is a sign of progress.
Though it is imperative that the US addresses its past actions, the government’s willingness to organize a meeting that seeks to address global climate change demonstrates a renewed commitment to reducing emissions. This, coupled with the new administration’s pledge to drastically cut US emissions, is a encouraging sign for efforts to reduce global climate change.
