Why this new plant is capturing carbon dioxide just to let it back out again

The new plant located in Zurich, Switzerland has recently made headlines thanks to a unique method of capturing and returning carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. This method, which has been pioneered by Climeworks AG, involves capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and then releasing it again at a later time.

This technology works by utilizing a large collector, or collector array, which contains specialized filters that absorb CO2 from the air. The plant then compresses and stores the CO2 before eventually releasing it again. This process is often referred to as ‘carbon capture and storage’ (CCS).

The new plant in Zurich is one of the first to utilize this technology, and it is a significant step forward in the fight against climate change. By capturing and storing CO2, the plant is able to eliminate large quantities of the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere.

Furthermore, the plant is also able to use the stored CO2 to create fertilizer, which can then be used to help maintain essential farming practices. This can have a positive impact on global food production and help reduce the amount of CO2 that is released back into the atmosphere.

It is likely that the technology used at the new plant in Zurich will soon be adopted elsewhere as carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) becomes increasingly popular. What’s more, the fact that the technology is able to capture CO2 and then release it again could offer a cost-effective solution for reducing emissions and fighting climate change for years to come.
