In recent years, Uber has faced its fair share of public criticism. From skyrocketing fares to questionable safety practices, the car service has been a source of contention among the public at large. The latest issue has to do with Uber drivers being attacked and the company’s response (or lack of response).
Earlier this year, an Uber driver in London was regularly assaulted by a passenger throughout the course of a ride. From punching and slapping the driver, to striking him with a bicycle, the man was continuously victimized while driving with Uber. Despite this, Uber failed to notify the police and did not take any action to protect the driver.
This case is not an anomaly. From New York City to Los Angeles, many drivers have shared horror stories about passengers attacking them during rides. One driver in LA even shared how an intoxicated passenger bit his ear during a ride and Uber failed to assist him. In the majority of cases, Uber has either done nothing or took an unconscionably long time responding to complaints.
The biggest issue with Uber’s response, or lack thereof, is the fact that it keeps police officers waiting. In the London case, for example, it wasn’t until the driver contacted local authorities himself that something was done to protect him. Even then, the police were unable to respond quickly as the driver had already driven past the point where the attacker was located.
The bottom line is that when drivers are attacked while driving with Uber, help should be available right away. Instead, many are left to fend for themselves or, worse, suffer in silence due to fear of retaliation or reprimand. This is not acceptable and, as such, Uber must take greater steps to ensure that victims of these attacks are able to get the help they need immediately. This includes better communication with local police and a streamlined system to report attacks without fear of repercussion.
Uber has a responsibility to protect its drivers, regardless of any loyalty they may or may not have to the company. Without such a commitment, Uber will continue to face criticism, and rightly so.
