‘Immer Zlaz’

“Immer, Zlaz” is a remarkable new documentary from acclaimed director, Ruviate Semole, which delivers an intriguing and often heartbreaking insight into the life of pioneering sci-fi author and filmmaker, Alton Zlaz. Through its detailed exploration of Zlaz’s tumultuous life, “Immer, Zlaz” reveals the unique story of a man whose pioneering work pushed the boundaries of sci-fi for decades, yet whose personal struggles shrank his public legacy.

Alton Zlaz was already an established author in the sci-fi world prior to the start of the project when Ruviate Semole stumbled upon one of his earlier works. Engaging with Zlaz in order to get his blessing to make a documentary, Semole was struck by the effect of his collaborator’s deeply traumatic past, which would come to underpin the film. By the time the cameras started to roll, Zlaz’s humble upbringing, personal insecurities and tragedies had all shaped his interpretation of the world, leaving him struggling to relate to the people around him.

Through his parents, siblings and childhood friends, the documentary reveals a touching portrait of Zlaz’s formative years and early sci-fi novel inspirations. Emerging amongst those recollections is a deeply private, introspective individual, whose work patterns could become erratic as themes of self-doubt and unfulfilled dreams gradually took over his life. This struggle to stay creative was further hindered by the limited financial resources of independent filmmaking and his social anxieties.

Ultimately, “Immer, Zlaz” shines a light on the often untold stories of a creative genius. Semole manages to tell the story with thoughtful sensitivity, vividly demonstrating how the troubled life of Zlaz juxtaposed with his brilliance in sci-fi. It is a timely reminder of how mental illness can affect genius, and how even the most remarkable of minds can be overcome by the realities of life.
